What is intellectual property?

Intellectual property deals with work created by an individual that was originated through his/her own thoughts. It protects / covers original work such as novels, plays music, literary, artistic works, discoveries and inventions; and words, phrases, symbols and designs. The purpose of intellectual property laws is to encourage new technology, artistic expression and invention while promoting economic growth. Do you find this valuable?
